  • Disaster avoidance control against heavy rainfall, Hiroshi Saito, Hirotada Honda, Ryoichi Kawahara, Proceedings - IEEE INFOCOM, 2017,   2017 10 02 , 査読有り, © 2017 IEEE. This paper proposes a disaster avoidance control method for use against heavy rainfall and discusses its effectiveness through actual weather data. The proposed control method uses geographical information data including weather data, hazard area data, and physical network data. By applying technologies related to meteorology, erosion control, and civil engineering to such data, the proposed method can evaluate the risk of a physical network being disconnected. On the basis of the evaluated risk, the proposed method reconfigures a logical network to reduce service disruption. The proposed method is applied to a cloud computing service network where, in addition to route changes, the relocation of virtual machines is possible, increasing its effectiveness. By using empirical data, we show that the proposed method reduces the probability of service disconnection to almost zero even for heavy rainfall causing landslides. Finally, an experimental system of the proposed method was implemented through software defined network technology and successfully controlled the experimental network.

Natl. Acad. Sci., 1990). We first establish a Fokker-Planck equation corresponding to the original stochastic differential equation-based model, then discuss its well-posedness and global-in-time solvability. The asymptotic stability of the incoherence and some properties from the dynamical system aspect are also discussed. </p>

CQ, 114, (298) 71 - 76,   2014 11 13 , Recent pervasion of smartphones and tablet terminals have resulted in the growing usage of applications over Internet connections through mobile networks. Especially, web and video applications are remarkable from the viewpoint of the frequency of usage and traffic they account for. As for web applications, Navigation Timing API, which enables simple performance measurement of web sites, was recommended in W3C recently. In this report, we propose an application of the Navigation Timing API to user quality monitoring and fault isolation in case of quality degradation in operation process of network providers. We also verify the effectiveness of the proposed method by some experiments.

CQ, 114, (209) 59 - 62,   2014 09 11 , As various mobile applications in communication networks have been provided, the dominant factors for the quality of user experience have been also changed though traditionally, it has been determined by network quality. Therefore, the concept of co-created quality has been important; users contribute to their network operators in some way of providing their information or resource to improve their experienced quality. This article presents, as a proof of the concept of co-created quality, a model of co-created quality and the procedure between users and network operators based on the model and also proposes two control policies that work for co-created quality: usage-based bandwidth assignment and bandwidth map. This article also discusses the difference of user experience brought by the proposed usage-based bandwidth assignment and its effectiveness through computer simulations.

For network careers, it is required to provide such network which achieves satisfactory quality of these various applications. In this report, we propose a method to introduce network conditions required for satisfactory application quality, taking video and Web applications as examples.

CQ, 113, (405) 51 - 54,   2014 01 24 , In the recent years, users perform massive communication daily under mobile environment. As a result, the quality of the services experienced by users at the time-sensitive applications will deteriorate because of the limitation of bandwidth resources. In this research, we discussed what factors determines the quality of services directly experienced by users at the time-sensitive applications. Then, we decided to focus on the context of users as one of the key factors. We investigated and modeled the context of users in video streaming applications using the technology of the progressive download, which is predicted to occupy the great portion of mobile traffic. This paper proposes and examines the system that controls communication networks by controlling users' conditions based on our user-context model. The validity of the proposed system is discussed by agent simulations.

CQ, 113, (7) 71 - 76,   2013 04 18 , While using application on mobile terminals, it is said that user's QoE often degrades. There are several QoE improvement methods taken by users, such as Wi-Fi offload or closing background applications on terminals. However, each user is under different environment, so that an efficient way to improve QoE is also different by users. In this study, we analyze quality factors of mobile applications, and establish methods for proposing way to improve QoE according to user's environment. We focus on web applications, which is one of the major purposes of using mobile terminals. In our method, collecting waiting times and network conditions of many application users, we determine QoE degradation factors by referring to high QoE users. We evaluated our method from the effectivitiy of the network condition indicator and the accuracy of determining QoE degradation points.

There are two methods for QoE improvement, carrier actions and user actions. We focus on the latter, which requires less time and money for improving QoE than the former. Efficient actions for improving QoE differ by user because each user may be in a different environment. We propose a methodology for specifying QoE degradation factors in order to suggest appropriate user actions. With our methodology, we collect the logs of many users and specify QoE degradation factors by referring to high QoE users.

CQ, 112, (119) 17 - 22,   2012 07 05 , Techniques have been debeloped to achieve interractive operation in a browser such as Ajax, and interactive operatable browser-based applications have become popular in recent years. In legacy type of browser-based appications, network and web-server perfomance are important, because these applications get the content from the web-server in respose to the user operation, therefor we have been developed monitoring technology for these performance indicators. On the other hand,it is difficult to apply these monitoring technology for becoming popular browser-based applications such as Ajax, because in these applications most of the processing is done in the web-browser. In the present report, in order to clarify the performance monitoring target, we evaluate categorizations based on browser-based applocations behavior, and its quality factors in both qalitative and quantitative aspects for each category. From the evaluation results, we found that quality (performance) of terminal is the most important quality factor for these becoming popular browser-based applications. Based on the result of this evaluation, we propose to develop monitoring technology taking into acount the factors of the user terminal.

CQ, 112, (119) 77 - 81,   2012 07 05 , The recent pervasion of the progressive download-based video services enhances the importance of the playback quality monitoring. The playback quality of the progressive download-based video mainly depends on the re-buffering time due to the buffer starvation. Therefore, we have to estimate the temporal amount of data in the buffer accurately. In the preceding papers, we have investigated the estimation of the playback state of the progressive download-based video making use of the packet capture data. The main feature of our method consists of the play-out buffer modeling, including the parameter estimation of the model, and the playback quality estimation by making use of the packet capture data as an input into the buffer model. However, it does not take the pause state initiated by users into account. Consequently, it was difficult to distinguish the buffer starvation from the pause state initiated by users. In the present report, we propose a method of playback state estimation including the pause state initiated by users. It enables us to distinguish the buffer starvation from the pause state initiated by users.

The turbulent viscosity coefficients, which include the Richardson number depending on the unknown variables, are formulated explicitly. We consider the problem in the 3-dimensional stripe-like region, and construct the strong local-in-time solution in Sobolev-Slobodetskiǐ spaces. Since the Internet is a best effort network, network QoS is not guaranteed. Therefore packet losses and delay variations affect application's throughtput, and it can cause stop of video. So it is very important to evaluate how network QoS degradation affect application services. In this paper, we propose a new playing state estimation method for progressive download services by packet level information. The method estimate playing and stopping timing of video contents. Especially we evaluate our method to apply for an TCP based progressive dowonload application, and the accuracy of our estimation method is shown.

For such a network resource design, considering TCP which is a dominant protocol in Internet is important. There are many researches on the throughput estimation for TCP flows. However most of those researches focus on the stationary behavior of TCP. Those equations express large sized flow's throughput well, but cannot express short sized flow's throughput. It is general that a network has various size of flows and there are many short sized flows. It is necessary to provide TCP throughput estimation for each sized flows. Also it is important to know how many flows can be accepted in the network while flow's with certain QoS. In this paper, we propose a new TCP throuhgput estimation method depending its flow size, and evaluate the network design using that equation can realize high efficient by simulations.

Although the efficient network design requires the close analysis of the video flow, only the average traffic on each observation period is available in the actual network management system. Therefore, it is necessary to estimate the behavior of the traffic based on the periodical observation. In this paper, we investigate the estimation of the maximum VOD session number in each observation period by applying M/G/∞ queueing model for the temporal VOD session numbers. We propose the parametric estimation of the service time based on the periodical observation of the VOD traffic. Methods of goodness-of-fit-test and the selection of the suitable service time distributions are also proposed.

  • An Efficient Network Resource Design based on an Enhanced Video Flow Modeling, HONDA Hirotada, IKEGAMI Daisuke, TSUCHIYA Toshiaki, IEICE technical report, 110, (287) 73 - 78,   2010 11 11 , It is pointed out that the recent pervasion of video streaming services will lead to some difficulties in designing the network. For the efficient network design together with the sufficient quality, we have to model the video flows appropriately. However, designing the network with existing methods of traffic modeling requires large amount of the network equipments. In this report, we propose an enhanced modeling of video flows and an algorithm to calculate the maximum value of the available link utilization, which will improve the efficiency of the network design. The validity of the proposed method will be numerically shown by comparing with the traditional method. We also discuss the dependencies of the results of both methods on the characteristics of flows in this report.

Motivated by lifetime estimation of telecommunication systems, 2-parameter and 3-parameter Weibull distribution are discussed in this paper. The discussion is limited to the case when the censor time is a fixed value. With the application of EIC and bootstrap method, the proposed method enables both parameter estimation and the goodness-of-fit test for the estimated distributions, when the sample size is small and the censored data are included. The discussion also concerns with the evaluation of variation of the esimated bias derived from the small sample size.

If we execute aht by every packet, it requires large amount of calculation with respect to time, so we need to predict based on the observed data obtained at each sample time. We have developed a new method of filtering and prediction using Kolmogorov's forward equation, for it is very convinient to calculate the conditional distribution explicitly for any time. Although our method focused on Ito diffusion process and some sort of Levy process, the network traffic is known to show self-similarity and long rage dependency, modeled by Fractional Brownian Motion(FBM in the following), whose Hurst parameter H is greater than 1/2. In this paper, we adopt our method for FBM with a drift term with a constant coefficient, and Hurst parameter H > 1/2. © 2008 SICE.

Our method enables to reduce both authentication time at the access point and fair bandwidth allocation to each access point after the authentication, including access time estimation with H^∞ filter at each access point. We show the effectiveness of our method using simulation case studies.
