It is possible to classify these studies into into four groups: first, central institutions related to Islam; second, central figures related to the policy toward Islam; third, the reaction or opinion of Japanese people to the policy toward Muslims or Islam in general; and, fourth, the activities of Muslims in Japan. Unfortunately, it is difficult to obtain results for the third type of study. We need to adopt media research to fill the gap. We intend to elucidate the Japanese opinion about Islamic affairs before and during World War II through the articles of Buddhist Daily Newspaper Chûgai Nippô (1937-1945), using its bibliographical database. We would like to introduce some examples of this interesting newspaper in this paper.

  • The Turkish Studies in Japan: Studies about the Turks in Anatolia, Nobuo MISAWA, Turkish Studies Review, 8, (15) 452 - 472,   2011 07 , 査読有り, 招待有り, There are two groups of Turkish studies in Japan. The first group consists of historical studies about the Turks in the North and Central Asia, next to the Chinese Empire, based on Chinese historical sources. The second group concerns the historical studies about the Turks in the Islamic World, outside the scope of North and Central Asia; the Saljuks, the Turkish principalities in Anatolia and the Ottoman Empire based on Arabic, Persian and Turkish historical resources. The latter group of Turkish studies was founded after the World War II, because until then, there were few relations between Japan and the Islamic World, unlike those with the European countries. It is possible to divide the history of the latter group of Turkish studies in Japan into four periods. The first period, from the end of World War I to the end of the World War II (1919-1945), constituted the foundational period. The second period, after the end of the World War II to the 1960s, was led by scholars like Mitsuhashi, Haneda and Mori, who employed Arabic, Persian and Turkish historical sources. The third period, after the 1970s, witnessed various scholars like Nagata, who conducted research in Turkey for seve

But at the same time, there are also some problems in the trends of studies. Suraiya Faroqhi is one of the first-rate scholars who try to make a new type of study to overcome some problematic aspects of existing studies in the field. Therefore, by examining her studies, we can understand the general trends of the field and its problems. In 1930's. studies in the social and economic history of the Ottoman Empire began at first on the subject of the timar system. Especially Omer Lutfi Barkan successfully showed the importance of this kind of study, and gave great influences to the scholars all around the world. Now individual researches go down even to the smallest detail. Local history is in full bloom and specialization of research subjects is speeding up. So there is a danger to lose a sense of balance, and be isolated from others. And what is worse, as for the total picture of the Ottoman Empire, many scholars blindly adopted the theory invented in the West. According to this theory, the Ottoman Empire enjoyed her golden age until the end of the 16th century and after this fell into a period of decline. But this is clearly a one-sided view of the history. It puts too strong an emphasis on the external factors like the change of the world trade system and the influx of Spanish silver to the Ottoman Empire. Criticizing this tendency, some scholars began to make a new type of study based on detailed researches of the internal factors, such as the domestic economic system and the social structure. Today two major theoretical frameworks in the world historical studies, i.e. Immanuel Wallerstein's "Modern World-System" theory and that of the Annales school, are giving great impacts on a new generation of historians who seek a new total picture of the Ottoman Empire. Faroqhi is considered to belong to the Annales school. She tries to apply Fernand Braudel's theory to her studies. And using many documents, she makes detailed researches on various subjects like socio-religious aspects of Islam and rural and urban societies. In this way she tries to draw a more realistic picture of the Ottoman Empire. The 16th and 17th centuries are her specialized period. She chose them because, according to the old Western view, the Ottoman social system underwent a period of stagnation after the end of the 16th century. She criticizes this view by showing evidences of internal developments in these centuries. Towns and Townsmen of Ottoman Anatolia is a book with this intention in mind. The book is divided into three parts as the subtitle shows. Part One dealing with the trade among towns consists of four chapters; commercial constructions, overland trade, maritime trade and port towns. In Part Two, three crafts are studied in three chapters; textile, leather and metal crafts. Part Three is concerned with food production in four chapters; relationships of towns with their agricultural hinterlands, meat supply, land problems of townsmen and internal migrations. Finally she concludes that towns were still developing even in these days in contrast to the Western view. Though stimulating, this book is not free from problems. As she herself says, she investigated only in the western and central Anatolia and dealt with only a few aspects of urban life. And it seems that she attempts to unite into one volume two themes rather independent to each other; a monographic study of towns on one hand and a theorization of historical urban development on the other. The reviewer doesn't think she is necessarily successful in this regard. This book is the first attempts to show a hypothesis of the activeness of the Ottoman society and economy in consideration of the internal factors in these centuries.

  • A Comparative Study on the Axis and the Japanese Policies toward the Middle East and Islam during World War II, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Akira USUKI, This study clarifies the characteristics of Japanese policy toward "Jewish Question" and "Muslim Question" compared with that of the Axis such as German and Italy that allied with Japan by Tripartite Pact during World War II. At the same time, the differences of the Axis policies toward Muslims and Jews are made clear by explaining the different conditions under which Muslims and Jews lived in the Middle East and North Africa on the one hand and East Asia and Southeast Asia on the other.

  • The Law-Cultured Study about the Collaborations between the National Statute Law and the Traditional Order Model in the South East Asia and the Middle East Area, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Takehide GOTO, In Asian Countries, including Japan, we can find the existence of two great Law Culture. First, 'the Traditional Order Model', which was created under the influence of the Old Chinese Culture. Second, 'the National Statute Law', which was introduced from European Countries. At the viewpoint of the Law History, we had various academic studies about the process of the collaboration of these two Law Cultures. Recently we find the great influence of "the Islamic Law" as the third impact on Asian Countries. For example, the population of the Islamic believer (Muslim) has increased explosively. i...

  • Ethnic Cleaning in a Global Perspective, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Tetsuya SAHARA, This study focused on a hypothesis that ethnic cleansing was a modern phenomenon based on a principle that state should be built on an ethnic nation. In three years of research, we have compared cases, both modern and pre-modern, of Europe, Eurasia, Middle East, Africa, East Asia. As a result, we found the trend that ethnic cleansing began in early modern Europe, then it spread over the Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Middle East, Asia, Africa, and former Soviet Union. In this way, we concluded we had proved the validity of our hypothesis. In the course of our study, we have found another impo...
